When is the best time to buy a semi truck? What the market, the calendar and your lanes say
By Fernandez, truck dispatcher · Updated
When is the best time to buy a semi truck? Owners ask it hoping for a month. The honest answer has three parts: the market (prices and rates), the calendar (seasons, model years and the tax year), and you (freight, cash and credit). The third part decides most deals. Below is what dated data says about the first two, and a checklist for the third.
Used semi truck prices in 2026
Used prices climbed through 2026. ACT Research's average retail price of used Class 8 trucks sold by the same dealers:

Average retail price of used Class 8 trucks sold by the same dealers, all configurations. ACT Research, State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, as reported by Fleet Equipment; latest revised figures. June 2026 omitted: ACT's reported and later implied June figures conflict. Your truck moved by the market average is an illustration, not an appraisal: age, miles and condition move a single truck more than the market does.
August's $64,367 was 11% higher than a year earlier, as fewer late-model trucks reached dealers. J.D. Power reported January 2026 retail prices up 1.7% from December and 7.1% from a year earlier. Looking ahead, Ryder System CEO John Diez told Transport Topics in August 2026 he expects used tractor and truck prices to rise at least 10% in 2027.
What it means: buyers who waited through 2026 for prices to fall paid more. Forecasts can be wrong, but the recent trend has not rewarded waiting. For the full monthly series and method, see the used semi truck price index.
Seasons: what the data does and does not show
We found no published study showing a reliable best month to buy a used truck. What the data does show:
- January is typically a slow month for auction activity, per J.D. Power's February 2026 update.
- December 2025 was dealers' strongest month for retail sales per dealership since December 2021, per J.D. Power's January 2026 update.
- Value keeps falling month by month. J.D. Power reported auction values falling 2.4% a month on average in 2025, while overall price levels still rose. Age lowers a truck's value; the market sets the level it falls from.
Fewer buyers at a slow auction can mean less competition on a given lot, but it is a lot-by-lot effect, not a rule. Shop by comparables, not by month.
Model years and EPA 2027
New trucks have a date that matters more than any season: model year 2027. EPA's heavy-duty standards for engines from model year 2027 (EPA final rule) come with a much longer federal emissions warranty: 10 years, 450,000 miles or 22,000 hours, against 5 years or 100,000 miles before, under 40 CFR 1036.120 as it read in October 2026. Truck makers estimated the rules could add $8,000 to $20,000 to a new truck, as reported by CCJ.
That gives new-truck buyers a real choice: a 2026 model at a lower price with the shorter warranty, or a 2027 with more coverage at a higher one. J.D. Power expected a mild pre-buy of 2026 models. If you buy used, the 2027 rules matter later, when those trucks reach the used market.
The tax year
Depreciation starts when a truck is placed in service, ready and available for its use, not when you sign. Under IRS Publication 946, a truck placed in service by December 31 can be depreciated on that year's return, and for tax year 2026, 100% bonus depreciation and a Section 179 limit of $2,560,000 apply under current law. A truck delivered in January moves the deduction a full year. Ask your tax professional how this fits your return; a deduction never makes an unaffordable payment affordable.
Interest rates
Many truck loans are priced from benchmarks such as the prime rate, which was 7.00% on October 26, 2026 in the Federal Reserve's H.15 release. Trying to time rates rarely beats a better credit score or a bigger down payment. See what moves your quote in semi truck loan rates.

Is it a good time to buy a semi truck for you?
Market timing moves the price a few percent. Your own timing decides whether the truck survives its first year. Buy when you can check most of these:
- Freight you can book. You know what your lanes pay per mile this month, not last year's high.
- A payment that fits a slow month. Run it through the how much truck can I afford calculator.
- Cash after the down payment. Insurance deposits, plates, permits and a repair reserve, plus a few weeks before the first broker payments arrive.
- Credit in shape. Pull your reports before you shop; see first-time semi truck financing.
- A truck priced against comparables. Use the semi truck value estimator, and check what a semi truck costs new and used.
- A plan for where you register. Taxes and fees vary by state; see which state to buy in.
When waiting makes sense
- You have no freight lined up and no way to price your lanes yet.
- The down payment would leave you with no reserve.
- Your credit report has errors you can fix in a few months.
- A specific truck is priced well above comparables and the seller will not move.
Waiting for those reasons pays. Waiting for a market dip, on recent evidence, has not.
Timing at a glance
| Factor | What the data says | Effect on timing |
|---|---|---|
| Used prices | Up 11% year over year in August 2026 (ACT) | Waiting has cost buyers |
| 2027 forecast | Ryder CEO expects at least 10% higher used prices | Points against waiting |
| Season | January slow at auction; strong December retail (J.D. Power) | Lot by lot, not a rule |
| Model year 2027 | Longer emissions warranty, higher estimated price | A real choice for new buyers |
| Tax year | Placed in service by December 31 | Matters for that year's deduction |
| Your freight and cash | Not in any index | Decides most deals |
