How much does a semi truck weigh? Tractor, trailer and loaded weights
By Fernandez, truck dispatcher · Updated
How much does a semi truck weigh depends on which part you put on the scale: the tractor alone, the tractor with an empty trailer, or the whole rig loaded. Below are the three numbers in pounds and tons, then the parts that make them up (cab, trailer, engine, tires, fuel), and what the weight means for the freight your truck can haul and the money it can earn.
Semi truck weight at a glance
| What is on the scale | Pounds | Tons |
|---|---|---|
| Day cab tractor, no trailer | 15,000 to 20,000 | 7.5 to 10 |
| Sleeper tractor, no trailer | 18,000 to 25,000 | 9 to 12.5 |
| Tractor plus empty dry van | 30,000 to 35,000 | 15 to 17.5 |
| Loaded rig, federal Interstate limit | 80,000 | 40 |
Tractor and empty-rig ranges from Ritchie Bros. (September 2025); the 80,000 pound limit from 23 U.S.C. 127. Tons are short tons of 2,000 pounds.
How much does a semi truck weigh without a trailer?
A tractor on its own, with no trailer behind it, usually weighs 15,000 to 25,000 pounds. That is the figure most people mean by an empty semi truck. The spread is wide because a tractor is built to order: two trucks with the same badge can differ by thousands of pounds once the cab, engine, transmission, axles, fuel tanks and wheels are chosen.
Five things move the number most:
- Cab. A sleeper adds the bunk, cabinets, insulation and a longer frame. More on that below.
- Engine. A 15 liter diesel weighs more than an 11 or 13 liter one.
- Axles. A tandem drive (6x4) weighs more than a single drive or a 6x2 with one driven axle.
- Fuel. Tanks are sized to the route, and diesel itself is heavy.
- Wheels and add-ons. Aluminum wheels are lighter than steel. An auxiliary power unit, extra tool boxes, headache racks and chrome all add pounds.
Day cab vs sleeper weight
Day cabs are the light end of the range: about 15,000 to 20,000 pounds. Sleepers run about 18,000 to 25,000 pounds, because the sleeping box, the extra cab structure and the larger fuel capacity long-haul trucks usually carry all add weight. A raised-roof sleeper weighs more than a flat-top or mid-roof one.
Which one to buy comes down to your freight and your hours, not just the scale. A day cab suits home-daily regional work and gives you more payload; a sleeper lets you take a 10-hour break in the truck on multi-day runs. Our day cab vs sleeper note and the guide to sleeper roof heights cover the trade-offs.
How much does an empty semi truck weigh with a trailer?
Hook an empty 53 ft dry van to the tractor and the rig usually scales 30,000 to 35,000 pounds. The trailer is the other half of the empty weight, and it depends on the type:
| Empty trailer | Typical weight, pounds |
|---|---|
| Flatbed | 8,000 to 10,000 |
| Dry van | 10,000 to 15,000 |
| 53 ft trailer, general | 13,000 to 15,000 |
| Reefer | 12,000 to 16,000 |
Ranges from Ritchie Bros. (September 2025). Aluminum flatbeds and composite vans sit at the low end; steel decks, reefer units and their fuel tanks push the number up.
A reefer is heavier than a dry van of the same length because it carries a refrigeration unit, a fuel tank to run it and thicker insulated walls. A step deck or extendable trailer for heavy haul can weigh well over a standard flatbed. If you run power only and pull other people's trailers, you still need to know each trailer's empty weight to figure what you can legally carry.
How much does a semi truck engine weigh?
A heavy-duty diesel weighs about a ton and a half. Cummins lists its X15 at 2,961 pounds dry, with a system weight of 3,152 pounds that includes 191 pounds of aftertreatment (the DPF and SCR equipment). Dry means without oil or coolant, so the engine in a running truck weighs a little more. Figures are from Cummins' X15 portfolio spec bulletin 5600306.
That is the reason fleets that haul heavy or dense freight often spec an 11 to 13 liter engine instead of a 15 liter one: the smaller block saves weight that can go into the trailer as paid freight. The trade is power on grades and, for some buyers, resale, since many used-truck shoppers look for the bigger engine.
How much does a semi truck tire weigh?
A standard truck tire on a 22.5 inch wheel weighs roughly 125 to 130 pounds without the wheel. One manufacturer's data sheet, for the Double Coin RLB1 drive tire, lists:
| Tire size | Ply rating | Tire weight |
|---|---|---|
| 11R22.5 | 14 | 124 lb |
| 11R22.5 | 16 | 128 lb |
| 295/75R22.5 | 14 | 129 lb |
| 11R24.5 | 14 | 137 lb |
| 11R24.5 | 16 | 140 lb |
Tread pattern, depth and construction change the weight from model to model, so check the data sheet for the tire you buy.
EXAMPLE: a tandem tractor runs 10 tires (2 steer, 8 drive). At 124 pounds each that is 1,240 pounds of rubber before a single wheel. Add a tandem trailer's 8 tires and the 18 wheeler carries 2,232 pounds of tires alone. Swapping duals for wide-base singles is one way fleets cut weight.
How much does a loaded semi truck weigh?
Up to 80,000 pounds, or 40 tons, on the Interstate system for a typical five-axle tractor and trailer. Federal law (23 U.S.C. 127) sets three limits that all apply at once:
- 20,000 pounds on any single axle.
- 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle group.
- 80,000 pounds gross, and less if the federal bridge formula gives a lower number for your axle spacing.
With 34,000 pounds on the drives and 34,000 on the trailer tandem, a rig at 80,000 pounds gross has 12,000 left for the steer axle. States set their own limits on roads off the Interstate, and loads above the limits need an overweight permit from every state on the route.
Two federal allowances can add weight on top:
- Idle reduction. A truck with qualifying idle reduction equipment, such as an APU, may weigh up to 550 pounds more to cover that equipment (23 U.S.C. 127(a)(12)).
- Natural gas and battery electric. A truck powered mainly by natural gas or battery power may exceed the weight limit on the power unit by up to 2,000 pounds, with a gross cap of 82,000 pounds (23 U.S.C. 127(s)).

Why truck weight matters when you buy
Every pound of truck is a pound of freight you cannot haul. The legal gross stays at 80,000 pounds, so the empty weight of the tractor and trailer decides your payload: the most cargo you can carry on a load.
| EXAMPLE rig | Tractor | Trailer | Empty rig | Room for freight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeper and dry van | 20,000 lb | 14,000 lb | 34,000 lb | 46,000 lb |
| Sleeper and reefer | 21,000 lb | 15,500 lb | 36,500 lb | 43,500 lb |
| Day cab and flatbed | 16,500 lb | 9,000 lb | 25,500 lb | 54,500 lb |
EXAMPLE weights for illustration, not measurements of any one truck. Room for freight is 80,000 pounds minus the empty rig, before fuel and driver.
Fuel counts too. EXAMPLE: two 150-gallon tanks hold 300 gallons; at an assumed 7 pounds per gallon, full tanks add about 2,100 pounds compared with empty ones. A load that is legal with half tanks can be overweight after you fill up.
Most dry van loads cube out (fill the trailer) before they weigh out, so a heavy sleeper costs a van hauler little. Flatbed, bulk and some reefer freight is the opposite: shippers load to the legal maximum, and a lighter tractor turns directly into more pounds per load. If your freight runs heavy, ask for the scale weight of the exact truck before you buy, and price it against a lighter spec. Our guide to what a semi truck costs has the prices to compare.

How to find out what your semi truck weighs
The ranges above are a starting point. For your own truck, get a real number:
- Weigh it empty at a certified truck scale. Truck stops have them. Ask for a ticket that shows steer, drive and trailer axle weights separately.
- Weigh it with full tanks and your usual gear on board, since that is how you will run.
- Read the door label. The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and axle ratings there are the most the truck is built to carry, not what it weighs empty.
- Keep the ticket. Your empty weight tells you the heaviest load you can take on every quote.
When you are buying used, ask the seller for a recent empty scale ticket. A seller who will not weigh the truck may not know its spec, and that is worth asking about. Our used semi truck checklist covers what else to check.
How much does the average semi truck weigh?
There is no official national average for tractor weight, and we do not publish one. Trucks are built to order, and no public agency reports scale weights by model. The honest answer is a range: about 15,000 to 25,000 pounds for the tractor, 30,000 to 35,000 for an empty rig with a dry van, and up to 80,000 loaded on the Interstate. A typical car, for comparison, weighs a few thousand pounds, so even an empty tractor weighs several times as much.
Weight and your truck payment
A truck that carries more freight per load can earn more per trip, but only on freight that weighs out. Before you add a payment, look at the loads you will actually haul: their weight, the trailer they need and the rate per mile. Our guide to whether dispatch can cover a truck payment walks through that math with real numbers.
Our truck dispatch service books loads matched to your rig's weight, trailer and lanes, so every quote you see is one your truck can legally haul.
Know your weight. Now fill the trailer.
Send us your truck, trailer and empty scale weight. A dispatcher finds loads that fit, and the rate con comes to you in your company name.
