How much is a semi truck monthly payment? Price, term and rate tables

By Fernandez · Updated October 2026

The monthly payment is the number most buyers ask about first. This guide shows EXAMPLE payments across common prices, terms and rates, explains what moves the number, and puts the payment next to everything else a truck costs each month. Every rate here is an EXAMPLE, never an offer.

Your payment, live

Enter the truck's price, your down payment, a quote's APR and the term. The calculator shows the payment, total interest and how each year splits between principal and interest.

All at an EXAMPLE 11.5% APR, before taxes and fees. Your rate decides the real numbers.

How the rate changes the payment

8% APRabout $1,642about $17,540
11.5% APRabout $1,781about $25,880

A few points of APR move the payment by over a hundred dollars and the total interest by thousands. That is why rates matter as much as price; see commercial truck financing rates.

What sets your semi truck payment

  • Price. The biggest lever. A less expensive truck lowers every month.
  • Down payment. Every dollar down is a dollar not borrowed or charged interest.
  • APR. Set by the lender from your credit, history, the truck and the market.
  • Term. Longer terms lower the payment and raise total interest.
  • Balloon. A lump sum at the end lowers the monthly payment but must be paid or refinanced.
  • Taxes and fees. Federal excise tax on new trucks, sales tax and fees, if financed, add to the amount borrowed.

How the down payment changes the payment

$90,000 truck, 11.5% APR, 60 monthsMonthly payment
No money downabout $1,979
$9,000 down (10%)about $1,781
$18,000 down (20%)about $1,583
$27,000 down (30%)about $1,386

EXAMPLE figures. Each $9,000 down takes about $200 off the monthly payment at this rate and term, and shortens the time you owe more than the truck is worth. Keep enough cash back for insurance, repairs and slow weeks.

Payments on box trucks, hotshots and specialized rigs

The same math applies to every rig. A 26 ft box truck or a hotshot pickup usually costs less than a Class 8 tractor, so the payment is smaller, but those rigs also run shorter loads, so the payment has to be spread over more loads per week. Heavy haul and specialized rigs cost more and earn more per load. Whatever the rig, compare the payment with what the truck earns in your lanes, not with what someone else pays for a different truck.

Used vs new payments

A used truck usually means a smaller loan and payment, but lenders may offer shorter terms on older trucks, which pushes the payment back up, and repairs come sooner. A new truck has a bigger payment, warranty coverage and often promotional financing from the manufacturer. Run both through the calculator with real quotes, then add a repair reserve to the used truck and see which leaves more each month.

What lenders treat as affordable

Lenders look at your income, other debts, credit, experience and the truck, and each sets its own limits. Being approved for a payment does not mean the truck can earn it in a slow month. Decide your own ceiling from your lanes first, using the how much truck can I afford calculator, and shop for trucks below it.

The payment is only part of the monthly cost

A truck also needs insurance, permits, fuel, tires, repairs and maintenance every month. ATRI's study of 2025 costs put the industry average at about $2.34 per mile including driver pay. Put your real numbers into the trucking cost per mile calculator to see the payment's share of the total.

How many loads does the payment need?

Divide the payment and your other fixed costs by what an average load leaves after fuel, repairs and empty miles. The result is your break-even number of loads each month. Our truck payment math article does it with a live sheet. If the number is more than your truck can run in a normal month, the payment is too big for the work.

Payment choices that backfire

  • Stretching the term to hit a number. A 72-month loan on an older truck can outlast the truck's useful life.
  • A big balloon. It makes the monthly payment look small and the final payment painful.
  • Zero down. You start owing more than the truck is worth.
  • Financing add-ons. Warranties and extras financed at the loan's rate cost more than paying for them up front.

Taking over a payment instead

Some owners sell by asking a buyer to take over their payments. It can look like an easy way into a truck, but the loan usually stays in the original owner's name unless the lender approves a transfer. Read take over semi truck payments before agreeing to anything.

Leasing vs a loan payment

A lease payment can be lower or higher than a loan payment for the same truck, depending on the term, mileage allowance and what is included. Compare totals, not monthly figures, using what leasing a semi truck costs. Electric trucks have their own payment math; see electric semi truck price.

When the payment gets hard to make

Call the lender before you miss a payment, not after. Many lenders have options for a short hardship, such as a deferral or a term extension, and they are far more flexible before an account goes delinquent. At the same time, look at the truck's earnings: more loaded miles, fewer empty ones and better rates can close a gap faster than any change to the loan. Our refinance a semi truck loan guide covers the longer-term options.

Planning around the payment

Set the payment date close to when broker payments usually arrive, keep at least two months of payments in reserve, and track your break-even loads each week. If freight slows, act early: talk to the lender before you miss a payment, look at refinancing, and plan routes that keep the truck moving. Our semi truck price guide helps if you are still choosing the truck.

Questions

How much is a semi truck payment on average?
There is no reliable published average, because prices, rates and terms vary so widely. A used truck in the $50,000 to $90,000 range financed over five years often lands around $1,000 to $1,800 a month at mid-range rates, while a new truck can run $3,000 or more. Use the calculator with your own quote.
What is the average monthly semi truck payment for a new truck?
New Class 8 sleepers we found listed in October 2026 asked roughly $180,000 to $225,000 before tax. Financed with 10% down over five years at an EXAMPLE 11.5% APR, that is roughly $3,500 to $4,500 a month. Federal excise tax and fees can push the amount financed higher.
How can I lower my semi truck payment?
Buy a less expensive truck, put more money down, improve your credit before applying for a better rate, or choose a longer term. A longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest and keeps you owing more than the truck is worth for longer. Refinancing later may also help.
What is a good semi truck payment?
One the truck can cover in a slow month in your lanes, with money left for repairs, insurance and your own pay. That depends on your miles and rates, not on a rule of thumb. Our payment math article shows how many loads a payment needs.
Does the monthly payment include insurance?
Usually not. The loan payment covers principal and interest. Insurance, permits, fuel, tires and repairs are separate. Some leases bundle maintenance, and lenders usually require certain insurance coverage, but you pay the premiums yourself, so budget them alongside the payment.
Does a longer loan term save money?
No. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest, because you borrow the money for longer. It can also leave you owing more than the truck is worth for longer while it loses value. Compare the total paid on two or three terms in the tables, not only the monthly number, before you choose one.
