Balloon loan

By Fernandez, truck dispatcher · Updated

A balloon loan has smaller regular payments that do not pay off the whole balance, leaving a large lump sum, the balloon, due at the end of the term. On truck deals it shows up as a lower monthly payment with a final payment of thousands, or tens of thousands, of dollars.

In practice: a balloon loan on a truck

EXAMPLE: $80,000 financed, 11.5% APR, 60 monthsNo balloon$20,000 balloon
Monthly paymentabout $1,759about $1,511
Paid over 60 monthsabout $105,540about $90,660
Balloon due at the endnone$20,000
Total paidabout $105,540about $110,660
Interestabout $25,540about $30,660

EXAMPLE figures, not an offer. The balloon saves about $248 a month and costs about $5,100 more in interest, because more of the balance stays outstanding for the whole term.

What to check before you sign

  • The balloon amount in dollars, in writing, and the date it is due.
  • Your plan to pay it: savings, a refinance or a sale of the truck.
  • What the truck will be worth then. If the balloon is larger than the truck's likely value, you will owe more than it is worth at the end. Our guide to semi truck depreciation by age and mileage shows how fast value falls.
  • Prepayment terms, in case you want to pay the balance down early.

Because business loans fall outside federal Truth in Lending disclosures (12 CFR 1026.3), the balloon is only as clear as your contract makes it. Ask for the total of payments, balloon included.

Run a balloon against a regular loan in the semi truck payment calculator, and read how balloons fit with other loan types in semi truck financing and truck and trailer financing.

A lower payment helps only if the truck keeps earning to the end of the term. Our owner-operator dispatch service books loads that cover the payment, and you approve every one.

Balloon loan questions

Why do truck lenders offer balloon loans?
A balloon lowers the monthly payment, which can make a truck fit a budget or help a borrower qualify. The lender still expects the full balance: it simply moves part of it to the end. Some lease-purchase deals use the same idea with a final purchase payment.
What happens if I cannot pay the balloon?
You usually need to refinance it, sell the truck to cover it or pay cash. If the truck is worth less than the balloon and no lender will refinance, you can lose the truck. Plan how you will pay the balloon before you sign, not in the last month.
